Just One Thing

How would our lives improve if we changed just one thing this week?

Changing just any old thing may not have any impact, for example, putting on your shirt before your pants, if that's your habit. That won't cause any ripple effects, mood enhancements, or much else, as far as I'm concerned.
But what if the ONE THING we focussed on was literally where we put our focus?
Bear with me; it will make sense in just a minute.Have you ever found yourself dwelling on those who don't support you? The spouse, partner, sibling, relative, or friend who never seems to have time to help you?

Have you noticed yourself thinking about how bad you have it and how they don't understand?
Please don't feel bad; we've all been there. I'm not trying to make you feel guilty; they should be more helpful. We all have those unsupportive people in our lives.

What would happen if we shifted our focus, time, and energy away from them and onto being thankful for the people we DO have?

What if we appreciated the store clerk who spoke to your loved one kindly, knowing they wouldn't get a coherent response?

What if we were thankful for the friend who calls weekly to check in and ensure we're okay?

What if we remember to be grateful for the people at church or elsewhere who enquire about our loved one or the friend who says she's going to the store and asks if we need anything?

Shifting our focus and energy to the ones who ARE present and who do make our lives a little easier can have excellent results on our mood, outlook, and emotions.

I have a client who swore she had zero help until we started discussing what her days looked like. As it turned out, several people were helping her. The ways might appear small, but they're still helpful, and they were taking minor things off her plate.

It's easy to get depressed and feel all doom and gloom. I challenge you to really look at who is helping you and thank them. Focus your thoughts on being grateful for them, and who knows what will happen?

They might do more or recruit more assistance for you! Let me know what changes you saw after trying this.

I am an author, speaker, caregiver, and Grammy. The latter is by far the most fun! Having been a primary caregiver 3x, I realized so many lessons were learned too late to benefit my Dad who passed of Parkinson's Disease. I resolved to write a book to make life easier and safer for other caregivers that would get them ideas, inspiration, and lessons learned. It's called "Caregiving: How To Hold On While Letting Go" available on Amazon. I am a Certified Caregiver Consultant and Advocate as well as a Community Educator for the Alzheimer's Assoc. and Founder of The PurpleVine LLC
